Restless by William Boyd

Club Rating: 4.4

We liked the daughter but didn't see a purpose for some of the story lines about the roommate. We all liked Eve/Eva and Romer. We all liked Jochen. It was fun to learn about being a spy. Some parts were slow but they didn't detract from the book.

Everything She Forgot by Lisa Ballentyne

Club Rating: 3.2

Our experiences are part of us whether we recognize it or not. Some people can change but it takes willpower and it can be easy to slide back into the old lifestyle. Most really liked George and felt for him as the underdog. It was implausible that he survived to have the ending.

The Expatriats by Janice Y.K. Lee

Club Rating: 4.6

The themes were lack of friendship, kids/no kids, all where lost and all of their lives were interconnected. The author captured the expat community extremely well. We all felt that Margaret was a good mother. Mercy had poor judgment but was not to blame. We didn't have as much compassion for Hillary as she was more detached and not very deep. We had conflicting feelings on her taking the child without adopting him.

It was meant to be about these 3 women but we also found it interesting that we didn't think about the men. We all enjoyed this book.

In The Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick

Club Rating: 2.0

A maritime historian, Philbrick recounts the hellish wreck of the Essex (which inspired Melville's Moby-Dick) and its sailors' struggle to make their way to South America, 2,000 miles away.

Orhan's Inheritance by Aline Ohanesian

Club Rating: 4.2

Everyone enjoyed learning more about the Armenian genocide as little was known about it. Some loved the way she phrased things and others thought it was too flowery.

There were so many different perspectives (the grandmother who didn't want to talk about it, the granddaughter who wanted to relive everything). An enjoyable read with a good discussion.

Jar City by Arnaldur Indridason

Club Rating: 3.9

The audio version was confusing between the names of the people and the names of the places. It has been made in to a movie.
Most, even the 'non mystery' members of the group, really enjoyed this read.

A Man Called Ove by Frederik Backman

Club Rating: 4.6

A curmudgeon old man that becomes endearing thanks to his neighbors and understanding his history. Some thought it was kind of simplistic with him being so rigid but a the story unfolded you saw how he came to be who he was.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Club Rating: 4.6

It was an interesting discussion with all different topics - which sister do you sympathize with more? Which character had the hardest circumstances? How they believed such different circumstance? How insight makes us see things differently? .

Everyone seemed to really enjoy the book.
